Preview, not official statistics

A first look at
2026

2025 figures are now official, see the 2025 year page. Fiskeridirektoratet has not yet published full escape, sea lice violation or disease outbreak figures for 2026, so that year is left out of the main dashboard and comparisons. As an early, unofficial signal in the meantime, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute's Laksetap tracker publishes monthly mortality risk estimates, drawn from the same underlying farm reports companies file with Fiskeridirektoratet. This page previews that data. It is a different metric, calculated with a different method, and should be read as context, not as a replacement for the figures on the main year pages.

Mortality risk, national median, 2020 to 2026
Each point is the median monthly mortality risk across all reporting localities nationwide. The dimmer segment covers 2020 through 2025, years with full official Fiskeridirektoratet data elsewhere on this site. The brighter segment is the 2026 preview window.

What "mortality risk" means here

Mortality risk is the modeled probability that a fish at a given locality dies within the month, based on the count of dead fish against the average number of fish alive through the month. It excludes escapes, slaughterhouse rejects and other losses, the categories covered separately in Two Ways to Count the Same Fish. The value shown is the median across all reporting localities in Norway, not a national total.

Most recent monthly figures
The most recently available months from the Laksetap dataset. Since June 2025 the tracker has updated quarterly rather than monthly, so the newest rows may still be revised as more data comes in.

Why this isn't on the main year pages

The main LaksAtlas year pages (2020 to 2025) use Fiskeridirektoratet's official annual statistics, which classify every fish removed from stock into four categories: dead fish, slaughterhouse rejects, escapees and other. That full breakdown is not yet published for 2026. Mixing this preview's mortality risk percentage into those comparisons would understate total losses, since it only covers one of the four categories and uses a different calculation method. It will be replaced with official figures once Fiskeridirektoratet publishes them.
